The Journey home is when you REST!

Thursday, September 15th
Joyce Tapy (right) and her daughter Erin are just two of the many who took advantage of the quiet motor coach ride.
We know we are in the good hands of driver Phil from Miller Bus Co, so catching up on rest is the only agenda of the day. Our overnight stop in Harrisburg,PA is approximately 250 miles from home and we will take comfort and food stops every 2 hours.
After lunch we'll bring out the BINGO game for "wonderful & fabulous" prizes (CHOCOLATE)!
We have made new friends, helped each other when needed and are the BLESSED to have experienced a trip of a lifetime!

High Street Travelers Group Photo

Wednesday, Sept 14, 2011
With the New York City skyline behind us, and having spent 4 wonderful days as, "The Best of New York City", all of the 50 travelers (always a fear of the tour escort is to leave someone behind) will board our motor coach and head west.
We were pampered and had a superb tour guide in Marta Cooper for the duration of our trip.
The anxiety that may have been in the back of our minds prior to starting the trip into the city on 9/11 is a distant memory. Sure, there were signs of extra security and precautions taken, but we were never in harms way.
Think about joining the next High Street Travelers group and YOU too can be in the photo!

Taking the Ferry to Liberty & Ellis Islands

The journey begins as it did for twelve million immigrants who entered here in the early 20th century for today's visitor..
The ferry swings away from the dock, leaving behind New York's distinctive skyline as the Statue of Liberty raises her gleaming torch across the harbor. Arriving passengers file out towards Ellis Island's impressive brick and limestone Main building.
Inside, the Baggage Room houses a collection of baskets, trunks and suitcases brought by immigrants. Upstairs, visitors guide themselves through the massive Registry Room, meticulously restored to its appearance in 1918 - 1924. Exhibits on three floors trace Ellis Island's history and the complex story of American immigration. A documentary film and audio tours were available.
This was a perfect ending to our four days in the city. The beautiful 80 degree day with sunshine made us appreciate park-like setting around us and prepare to bid good-bye to the hustle and bustle of east-coast island life.

NO Words to Describe Today at the 9/11 MEMORIAL

Today, Tuesday September 13 was monumental for the High Street Travelers in NYC.  More in a minute...
The destination of our touring was downtown - Wall Street and the Financial district, Battery Park, St. Paul's Church, Trinity Church, Winter Park and Federal Hall. All were impressive and a part of New York that visitors should not miss. Lunch had us back in Mid-town for the opportunity to make the Observatory Experience at the Empire State Building.  Located on the 86th floor, the deck affords visitors a 360 degree view of Manhattan Island, the 4 surrounding boroughs and Lady Liberty.
Our evening meal was the theatre district's own Sardis Restaurant, known for their caricature portraits of famous customers and THEN we were off to the Broadway MEGA hit The Lion King!
BUT, the absolute highlight of our day was being the FIRST outside tour group to visit the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero. Flowers remained from the families who were just visitors 48 hours ago at the 10th anniversary ceremonies.
The National September 11 Memorial honors the 2,983 men, women, and children who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 AND February 26, 1993.  The Memorial consists of two pools set in the footprints of the Twin Towers, surrounded by a plaza of more than 400 trees. The names of the victims are inscribed in bronze around the pools. All but one of the Memorial trees are swamp white oaks. The one that is not is a Callery pear tree, known as the Survivor Tree because it once stood on the original WTC plaza. After 9/11, it was nursed back to health and now thrives again at the site.
A very somber experience, yet left us feeling extremely proud of our American resilience.

THE BEST OF NYC

Under a full Moon, we enjoyed a picture-perfect night into the NY Harbor.
But earlier in the day: TRAFFIC, traffic and more traffic. That is how most Monday mornings start in the city...
Beginning in Mid-town Manhattan, Marta made sure we knew the origins of Rockefeller Center and St Patricks Cathedral before moving on to Radio City Music Hall for the STAGE DOOR TOUR. This is the most historic and most Iconic tour in the city and we were not disappointed! The treat at the end of the 1 hour tour was a chat with a "real live" Rockette:)
After two hours on our own for lunch and sovenoir shopping, we gave our weary feet a few hours rest.
Now to continue on with the evening highlight: New York's Ultimate Dining Cruise on the BATEAUX.  This glass-domed vessel leaves Pier 61 for a 3 hour delight with culinary cuisine and 180-degree skyline views.  Traveling up the Hudson River, under the Brooklyn & Manhattan bridges and around Liberty Island was breath-taking. Even as I write this, the goose-bumps from seeing Lady Liberty under the moon-lit sky still are with me.
Im not sure how we are going to top this day........

Spending the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 in NYC

By 11 am, our awesome motor coach driver Phil, and tour operator Pam has us in the city to begin a wonderful day of celebration and touring.
Many ceremonies had already taken place downtown at the opening of the 9/11 Memorial. Our plans are to be able to take in lower Manhattan onTuesday.
We found Midtown and Uptown were very navigable. With the help of an extremely knowledgeable tour guide, Marta, sites on today's agenda included: FIRE STATION #54 (shown above), Central Park, Harlem and lunch at the House of Prayer, St. John the Divine Cathedral, Columbia University, Museum Mile, Millionaire's Row, 5th Avenue, Grand Central Terminal, and Times Square.
This very emotional day was also one of celebration and pride. America's spirit and love of our country can not be replicated nor denied.
We are truly blessed in so many ways!

POINTING US IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

A late afternoon shower (brief) produced this beautiful rainbow leading our motor coach along the highway.
GOD IS GOOD - ALL THE TIME!

NEW YORK CITY HERE WE COME...

Well, the High Street Travelers are on the road and heading for the BIG APPLE. The 6 am start was extremely FOGGY leaving the Meijer parking lot, but the day became increasingly better and we report: NO travel delays, construction or bad weather from our end.
In the photo above, Pastor (retired) Charlotte Overmyer and her two sisters Eileen and Phyllis the enjoy afternoon sunshine at our Pennsylvania "comfort stop".
The entire group (of 50) is looking forward to an amazing trip - albeit the many emotions that arriving in the city tomorrow will bring.

CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES 2 AT BEEF & BOARDS 8/3/2011

Laughter is the ONLY option at this 2nd installment of the popular and well-performed production.  So popular, that the High Street Traveler contingent was 80-strong; 2 buses required to take us away on the warm August afternoon for a plentiful Beef & Boards buffet .
Picking up where the Lutheran Women of Minnesota left off in 1969, the kitchen is still the gathering place for weddings, funeral dinners, the pastor's coffee and of course GOSSIP!
Look for the third installment, AWAY IN THE BASEMENT - A Church Basement Ladies Christmas in 2012 and High Street Travelers will not want to miss it!

BOGGSTOWN DELIGHT

On a warm July afternoon, the High Street Travelers made our way to Shelby County and the quaint 4-way stop called Boggstown,IN.  IF you haven't ventured down this way it is WELL worth the trip.
Joining the grain elevator, Post office and church in this metropolis housing 230 residents is Boggstown CABARET.
Shown above is Mrs Ashley, one of our guests singing her heart out accompanied by the 3-piece orchestra. The additional entertainers delight crowds with song, dance, corny jokes and audience participation. A GOOD time was had by all!

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME 6/8/2011

On one of the HOTTEST June days yet, the brave High Street Travelers spent the day at the ballpark in Cincinnati. The saving grace of the 95 degree day was the SHADED seats selected by our coordinator, Deb! A nice breeze was coming in Great America Ballpark as we enjoyed the afternoon game. The Chicago Cubs ended up winning by the score of 4-1 and our group enjoyed a wonderful dinner stop on the way home in Batesville at the Sherman House.

Hilton Head Island, SC

Harbor Town Golf Course Hole #18 behind us

We are enjoying a sunny, VERY warm blue-sky week on the island with good friends Scott & Vicki Shockley. Our daily routine goes something like this:
Exercise Pool/beach Golf Eat REPEAT as necessary!

The girls/guys golf challenge is all tied at 1-1, so today is for the CHAMPIONSHIP! Handicaps have been checked carefully and a lot is at stake.

The FRESH seafood on the island is awesome!!! We have several favorite restaurants and are trying to get to them all, as well as a day in Savannah.

Greetings to everyone at home... stay cool there as well:)

Shipshewana Day NOT spoiled by Rain

Wednesday May 25, 2011

High Street Traveler Ladies making purchases at the Little Helpers Quilt Shop Shipshewana, IN

Once every 5 years, we experience a day like 5/25. The rain NEVER stopped, but our enthusiasm didn't!

A wonderful Mennonite guide, Mary Ellen Fry, escorted us through the back roads (and puddles) of Amish Country to sample the homemade goods of breads, cheeses and quilts and even a little history.

Bud Ward, our experienced and energetic motor coach driver, also stood at the bottom of the steps with an umbrella and poncho the whole day keeping us as dry as possible.

The Wednesday Flea market actually CLOSED for several hours in the morning due to the terrible storms and opened after lunch for 1 hour just for the persistent shoppers on our coach.

A traditional Amish Thresher lunch was enough food to feed us for days at Cindy's Kuntry Kitchen.

All in all, the day was salvaged with sampling the goodies we purchased in town and our coach was entertained by Betty Longshore and "her girls". Betty was celebrating her 80th birthday on the trip and the chatter from the back of the coach was endless... a sign that a "good time was had by all"!

Home Safely!

Darlene & Bill Heath pass time in the Rome airport

After a somewhat rocky start to our journey on April 26th, the exit from our good ship was seamless. Part of the ship recap:

  • position as we docked 42 degrees 06.25' North 11 degrees 46.34' East

  • sailed 3191 nautical miles

  • ship's registry - Bahamas and built in 2003 in Finland

  • capacity 5,020 (including crew)

  • complete with 7 bed medical facility & surgical room

  • run by 6 diesel generator engines
Our airport troubles were minor with a 2 hour delay out of Rome in a very complicated system for security (part of the week's Bin laden event), but ALL 22 of us departed at 8:10 am local time bound for Philly via a 10 hr flight.

Like Dorothy told Toto, "there's no place like home". Some of us will still make our duties at the High Street May breakfast tomorrow am.

Thank you again for being a blog follower and check back as more photos will be added!
Talk to you soon,
Deb

Sea Day 5/10

Rough storms (although not like the hail ECI experienced) awakened us Tuesday am. Our fine vessel rescued a distressed yacht and 3 passengers off the coast of Italy early this morning. Yea - Mariner of the Seas and Captain Nielsonn!

The sun produced itself in the afternoon as the group busied ourselves with card playing, scrap booking, trivia games, cribbage and more art exploring (as seen above).

Then, the thought of packing had to enter our minds..... but fond memories will NEVER go away.

Below is a sample of a list started at the dinner table of special memories:

  • walking the marbled streets of Ephesus & scenic Rhodes

  • climbing the 168 steps to the top of the Acropolis

  • standing where Paul the Apostle spoke in Ephesus

  • standing in the Garden of Gethsemane

  • the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem

  • being at Mary's House on Mother's Day

  • walking the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem

  • standing in the Jordan River just like Jesus when he was Baptized

  • riding the boat across the Sea of Galilee

We said our good byes to new friends made over the last 13 days. Tomorrow is a very early start and LONG travel day. We pray for smoothness and SAFETY!

Crete

Lois, Phyllis & Janice explore Greek Island of Crete

Downtown Chania

On the Northwest coast of the Greek Island Crete is the ancient city Chania, restored and rebuilt after WW 2 to its Venetian charm. A welcoming harbor calls back fishermen...the colorful cafes welcome tourists seeking the W.C.
Shops line an updated downtown waiting for more Euros to be spent if one opted not to go on an excursion to the outer regions where monasteries and a National park lie.
The short day in a port city... we now sail back to Rome; which means our journey is coming close to its end:(

Sea day tomorrow...

Ephesus (Port of Kusadasi)

The House believed to be Mary's later in life -

Outside Ephesus

SUNDAY
Sorry for the late post... Internet at sea is so-so reliable! But for us another Mediterranean mid-70's sunny day. Wish I'd brought closer to 20 SPF.

Western Turkey has many beautiful seaside towns that attract thousands to the resorts on the Aegean Sea. The proximity to the ancient city sights make it an attractive port of call.
Interesting Ephesus facts:

  • considered one of the greatest outdoor museums of Turkey

  • was once a seaport and now 6 miles away from the sea with roads & habitation

  • ancient city was built 4 times in the history and the Ephesus of today is considered the 3rd

  • the toilets of the ancient city were arranged side by side with no partition between men's & women's. Slaves heated them before their master's use in winter

  • one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world here with the Temple of Artemis

  • St Paul the Apostle gave lecture in the Tyrannus Hall and the synagogue for 2 years in his 3rd missionary journey

  • only 35% of the city has been excavated

Performers in the 24,000 seat theatre (besides Apostle Paul) include: Diana Ross, Elton John and Yanni for fund raising efforts.

But of particular interest was the house believed to be that of the Virgin Mary in her last years. A small cottage hidden in the hills has been visited by Pope the 6th Paul and Pope Jean Paul. This place of pilgrimage is visited by millions every year, yet maintains its holiness for the Muslims as well as Christians. Drinking from the well here is believed to be sacred as wishes are made.

Much shopping is available for Turkish rugs, scarves, jewelry and fabrics.

All is well with the Travelers and we feel so blessed to have experienced today!

Rhodes, Greece

Enjoying the view as Dave & I walk back to the ship

It is 6:30 pm and we have just left the stunningly beautiful Greek Island. Known for its sandy beaches and 300+ days of sunshine each year, Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands.
Many in the group took the scenic island tour to see Lindos and had lunch (with wine) on the mountaintop.
Or we ran into several exploring the archaeological treasures of medieval Old Town which once held the famous Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nothings remains of the bronze statue, but the medieval city walls are remarkably intact.
Either excursion made for a spectacular day, due to a cloud-less perfect blue sky.
Back on ship I expect to see many at the Ice Show; yes the ship has a rink, taking in the magnificent art collection, or even WINNING a few bucks in the casino. One of the highlights will be the Love & Marriage show tonight.
Tomorrow we make our stop in Kusudasi,Turkey for the full or half day excursions to ancient Ephesus.
We thank you all for following the blog, your comments and wishing all the ladies HAPPY MOTHERS DAY tomorrow!!!

SEA DAY #3

Derexa, Phyllis & Lois read poolside

Sea Days are WONDERFUL!
We don't care what day it is... because we really don't know!
Do everything there is to do on ship... or do NOTHING!
We opted for the latter... slept in late, read by the pool, watched the ice carving and played Mini-putt; as our new British friend Martin calls it. Dave is UP 1-0. Re-match tomorrow. Some things never change - I had 5 penalty strokes? And it's putt-putt at sea!!
The LaGranges and Heaths were going to play euchre in the card room - hopefully the girls really beat up on the guys! Derexa, Phyllis & Lois were reading pool-side also. There is a rumor that Hazel P went rock-climbing! Anyone surprised? NOT me!!! Hazel is a TROOPER at 84 years young; she doesn't miss a beat.
OK - so we visit the Greek island of Rhodes tomorrow with various history. I just realized we missed Cinco de Mayo - hope you all enjoyed. AND, by the way it was 84 degrees yesterday:)

ISRAEL (Day 2): Jerusalem & Bethlehem

GROUP PHOTO - standing across the street from the Garden of Gethsemane. The walled city of Jerusalem is behind us!

We began our 2nd day in Israel very early (although not as early as our guide Moshe) to travel inward from the port of Ashdod. The major highway is very busy and we saw an unfortunate accident involving a truck that had caught fire.
A special treat right away was a view of the new & old cities of Jerusalem from Mt. Olive. Yes it was the traditional sermon on the mount and making of scripture of the Beatitudes! Then down the mountain to visit the garden of Gethsemane - a very peaceful garden among olive trees and next to the Church of All Nations (also known as the Church of Agony). It is commonly known for the place of Simon Peter's betrayal of Jesus.
Then it was into the Old walled city of Jerusalem and visit to the Wailing Wall (or Western Wall). It is the closest location to the place where the temple used to stand. The wall we know today was part of the temple's western wall, hence it's name.
The walk thru the Via Dolorosa (or stations of the cross) was ONE of the most impressive & humbling yet. We were not able to walk all 14 stations, but concluding at stations 10 - 14 and inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre ; where Jesus was crucified, died and buried was beyond words!
After lunch we were taken to Bethlehem. Still being a Palestine-controlled area, our Israeli guide could not accompany us. We were, however, treated with Salwa who has ties to Indiana.
We concluded our day with a visit to the church of the Nativity - the birthplace of Jesus. The church is built over the grotto where the Virgin Mary is said to have given birth to baby Jesus.
All this in a 10 hour day...... Both of these 2 days we did as a private tour, on our own coach with the guide (who happened to sell olive oil from his cousin's farm). We promised Moshe we would be GOOD ambassadors for the Country of Israel and he and the drivers treated us very special! Several more stories, but I'll save for another day.
PEACE!

ISRAEL: (DAY 1) NAZARETH & GALILEE

Deb steps in the Jordan River

Shalom to our friends back home -
Again, please be re-assured that we our very safe and secure. Royal Caribbean would not risk the safety of over 3,400 passengers AND the tourism dollar is VERY welcome here.
We began our day in a comfortable motor coach to the village of Nazareth; the boyhood home of Jesus. Our guide, Moshe, is Russian-born, but very knowledgeable regarding the somewhat short history of Israel as country, but deep in Biblical history.
In Nazareth, we toured the Basilica of Annunciation - the sight where angel Gabriel spoke to the Virgin Mary announcing the coming of our Lord.
We drove a little farther east to the Sea of Galilee; to almost the spot where the River Jordan meets the Sea and where John baptized Jesus. It is all very surreal...
After a traditional lunch of fish (the whole one complete with eyeball) we boarded a wooden vessel and sailed across the sea to Caperneum. This area, combined with Tag bu is where Jesus and many disciples performed acts of miracles; specifically the Multiplication of the loaves & fish!
St. Peter is also revered is this area as the next leader and Saint.
Agriculture is the next largest form of the economy with Olive tree and by product exports.

"Arise, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for unto you I give it" GEN. 13,17

Good day from your weary travelers,

Photos - Still a no, BUT we are SAFE!

Well it's NOT 3 G on the ship and at .60 cents a minute, I'm not going to keep trying to download photos, but please know that we are completely SAFE in this part of the Mediterranean and thank you for your prayers!!!!
We had a 68 degree sea day today and nice, calm seas. The Mariner of the Seas is a floating city and there is so much to see and do!
Tomorrow is our first stop in Israel - the Sea of Galilee, Caperneum and Nazareth. We will have an English-speaking guide and a private motor coach all day. Looking forward to beginning our journey on the path of Jesus and his Disciples!

Love to all,
Deb, Dave & the Travelers

Mediterranean Sea & Athens Greece

Ada C & Eva K taking in the sights atop the Acropolis

After a much needed rest day at sea where we basked under the sunny 70 degree skies, we arrived in the Port of Piraeus, Greece to meet a tour guide and take in all that Athens (ancient & new) has to offer.

Walking on the same paths (treacherous & cobbled) as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Roman emperors was surreal; Really - hard to take in that we are truly here.

The hilltop Acropolis was breathtaking! The Greek architecture beyond words - so just enjoy the photos and next time I plan a trip like this, join in!

We are safe & secure and ecstatic with the US news from overnight!!
So glad you are following along......

Amalfi Coast & Ancient Pompeii

Pizza oven in Ancient Ruins of Pompeii

Weather predictions are the same ALL over the world. I guess partly cloudy means brings an umbrella OR poncho for the WHOLE day:(
But that didn't stop our ambitious trek starting at 7 am to view one of the MOST beautiful coastal regions of Italy. South of Napoli (Naples), our tour began in Salerno with a 45 minute motor boat launch to the seaside village of Amalfi. There we climbed the 62 steps to view the inside of Cathedral de Andrew, the church of St Andrew. Incidentally, Dave & I were married in St. Andrews UM Church.
The quaint village is surrounded by hillside groves of lemon trees. A popular liquor of Limoncello could be sampled, as well as wonderful pastries and a cappuccino! Then it was back onto the launch and a short drive to Pompeii for a 4 course lunch with vino:)
The rain still did not curb our enthusiasm for the guided tour of the ancient walled city that has been uncovered from the volcanic ashes of Mt Vesuvius 2000 years after eruption - yes thousands.
Walls, sidewalks, pottery, paintings and even bodies show life plainly as wealthier Roman families lived, worked and played. Pizza ovens, road reflectors and rain sis terns were just a few of the many inventions plainly evident in daily use.

Dave & I agreed this was a place like no other.

The Mariner of the Seas is a magnificent ship we are being treated like Royalty; so don't feel bad that we weren't invited to London.
Ciao...

Rome & Port of Civitaveccia 4/28 & 4/29

ROME HIGHLIGHTS

The Colosseum , Trevi Fountain & GELATO!

Our group photo inside the Colosseum...

Our English-speaking guide Ornella was wonderful and made sure we did not become road kill on some of the busiest streets in the world.

The chocolate gelato (surprise?) was worth the price of admission while I threw my coin into the Trevi fountain for luck (a wish for a return trip)!

The Friday am excursion to the Mariner of the Seas was UNEVENTFUL!!!!!

Dave arrived right on cue and we both watched the Royal Wedding in the 19th Hole lounge with a cocktail.

LIFE IS GOOD! (God is good - all the time)!!

Gotta go - the birthday party starts soon:) I must admit, we're the BEST 50 year old couple on the ship!!

Great Destinations Travel ROCKS! (Airlines Don't)

I have learned 2 important things since leading group travel :

1) Use a qualified & licensed travel agency. There is NO substitute for the service provided! Julia Wadsworth and her staff of Joe, Helen and Mandy in MUNCIE are truly there and available to see you through the WHOLE way. AWESOME and thank you so much!!!

2) Always, always, always buy travel insurance offered by the carrier or provider. I won't bore you with the whole "WHY I dislike certain air carriers", but we will get reimbursed for all of our costs associated with being delayed and missing part of our Rome days.

That said, our eventful journey to Italy (this chapter) ends on a positive note. ALL 21 travelers are here safe & sound and taking in the sights before heading to the cruise ship Friday. Dave join us at then!

ARRIVEDERCI! Deb & weary ones...

4/13 MYSTERY TRIP

Last week's day outing was our Spring Mystery trip to Wayne County and Richmond, IN. Our first stop was to greet and pick up Maxine Chenowith, our guide for the day before venturing into Warm Glow Candle Factory. Conveniently located off I-70, we had time to browse, shop and LOVE a new product.

Webb's Antique Mall in Centerville, IN was our next stop. Aisles and aisles of treasures fill acres of real estate in hundreds of booths. Many travelers, including me, had never visited this establishment before and we most certainly will return.

A bountiful lunch was enjoyed in downtown historic Richmond's Olde Richmond Inn. The travelers had time to rest a bit and appreciated the served selection of plates available before moving onto our afternoon stop.

The historic Gaar Mansion and Farm was a treat for our private party. The Abrahm Gaar family built the home in 1897 north of downtown Richmond. Many of the original furnishings have been returned and restored to authenticity. Our guides were knowledgable and thorough with the tour of the 3-story home. In addition , the barn contains an original steam engine (#2) manufactured by the Gaar-Scott Company.

The day was treat for us all! GOD IS GOOD...ALL THE TIME!
